This (not very) old House

Welcome to this episode of "This (not very) old House" where today we will be discussing flooring. We're here with the Cannon family, Matt, Terri and their two boys. Here we have a 2 story, townhome built in the mid 2000's. On today’s episode the Cannons will be removing their old carpet, which was deemed not suitable for human living by Terri. Terri suspected that the builders took used carpet, cut out any comfort, and glued it to bare concrete, then 207 elephants walked on it and then applied stain pellent (the opposite of stain repellent). Following extreme nagging and begging the family decided to install laminate flooring.

Removing the carpet:

The first step is removing the furniture and putting it in the most inconvenient places in your house, so not only the work area is un-functional but so is everywhere else. Carpet removal went quickly, removing the carpet tacks was difficult but the Cannon's youngest, Ian was able to loosen them enough for Matt to remove them completely.

Preparing the baseboards:

Removing the baseboards, can prove to be problematic, but the homeowners decided to go the extra mile and remove them (carefully, because they didn't want to replace them).

Preparing the bare floor:

Terri and Jason swept and vacuumed. The Cannons invited Scott and Stephanie Murphy to help install the flooring (apparently 4 people who don't know what they are doing are better than 2). Underlayment went down with ease, but tensions rose in the usually calm house because "Matt just wasn't doing things right".

Floor installation:

This was the easy part, especially with the help of friends, their power tools, and an antique hutch used as your workbench.

Finishing Touches:

Putting the baseboards back on, our homeowner Terri enjoyed the nail gun a little too much! She still gets giddy thinking about it. Matt was able to use his painting skills to touchup the baseboards and wall.

Looks like the family cat wasn't affected by the upheaval. Here is the finished room, minus the furniture.
